May 29 inauguration: Police warn against protests in Ebonyi

Before Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s inauguration as president of Nigeria and Francis Nwifuru as governor of Ebonyi State on May 29, the Ebonyi State Police Command has advised resentful political parties and their supporters in the state against protests and disturbances of the peace.

In a statement, Police Commissioner Faleye Olaleye issued the warning.

The statement was released to the media on Monday in Abakaliki and was signed by SP Onome Onovwakpoyeya, a police spokeswoman.

Olaleye promised that police would take decisive action against any individual(s) or group of individuals who disobey this order or purposely disrupt peace and order during the upcoming inauguration of the president-elect and governor-elect.

The statement says, in part, “The Command wishes to notify the general public that all forms of protest by any aggrieved party or supporters of the just concluded gubernatorial, national, and state House of Assembly elections will not be tolerated before, during, and after the May 29th 2023 inauguration.

This is in light of a report from the intelligence community that some individuals or groups of individuals are preparing to demonstrate, which will increase unrest in the state.

“Aggrieved individuals or groups should have faith in the court, and as a result, they should wait for the tribunal’s decision in matters that are already before the court.

“The Command will not be hesitant to take serious action against any individual(s) or group of individuals who disobey this order or purposefully bring about the breakdown of law and order in any way or fashion. Police officers have been strategically placed and instructed to ensure complete enforcement, so anyone responsible will be apprehended and made to face the full force of the law.

Additionally, CP Olaleye urged the populace to obey the law, abstain from all acts of violence, and work with security organizations because measures have been put in place to safeguard residents’ lives and property.

He also informed the state’s inhabitants that it would always carry out its obligations in a professional manner in accordance with the requirements of the constitution and other applicable legislation.
