Seun Kuti, an award-winning singer of afrobeat, has called the recent assault on a police officer that landed him in jail a “misdemeanor charge.”
This was said by the artist recently during a fan-interactive Instagram live session.
Kuti slammed the people who were criticizing him on social media for assaulting a police officer, claiming that followers had never criticized other Nigerian celebrities who had been charged with felonies.
Instead, he claimed, they support and applaud those nefarious personalities on social media.
“I know at least three Nigerian celebrities who are facing felony charges,” he claimed. It’s a misdemeanor in my case. No matter how ominously they speak, the charge I have against them is still a misdemeanor. If we’re being fair, hitting a police officer counts as a misdemeanor. I am held accountable for that.
But you folks come online and you fight for these people with felony charges—fraud, assault, rape. True criminals.
